As I study these theology books that I cited previously, I am overwhelmed at the immense knowledge and talent these men possess(ed). Particularly Calvin and Luther. They are by far the hardest to read, outline, and digest. With that in mind, I will try to tone down my writing style, under my brother's (English major) recommendation, and try to write simply, and concisely, using 21st century language. Another disclaimer to that is that I will still use the good, solid, doctrinal wording that has been used for 1500+ years in important instances (ie: my main points of study). Grudem waters some of these words down, speaking in easy-to-understand sentences, while Calvin speaks in compound, complex, triple axel- double toe sentences (my mom like figure skating, not me, I promise). I plan to take the middle road, hopefully.
The first major heading under our systematic study is "Theology Proper." This basically means the study of the being, attributes, and works of God. So, in other words, we will begin the systematic study with the study of God. How fitting. Some begin with "Bibliology": the study of the Bible, but Calvin starts with God, and I like that. Bibliology will come next. Grudem puts Bibliology before Theology Proper; therefore, I think we can deduce that he is a heathen (more sarcasm).
This is an outline of what we will cover in this semi-abridged (definitely not exhaustive) study.
I. Theology Proper
1. Origin of the Idea of God
2. The Knowledge of God
3. The Character of God
4. The Divinity of Christ
5. The Holy Spirit
6. Creation
7. Providence
8. Angels
That sounds like a lot, but that IS our Theology Proper. We will do only 5 main topics.
I. Theology Proper
II. Bibliology
III. Anthropology
IV. Soteriology
V. Eschatology
Of course there will be lots of subheadings, but I plan to do one subheading per post, with 1-3 per week. Leave the math for school, we will be done when we get done. We will study about God our entire lives, why not learn something that pushes us to glorify Him deeper in the meantime?
Stay tuned for the Origin of the Idea of God study soon.
